Barcelona to Zaragoza by AVE: One Night While Goya Museums Close
Take the high-speed train for the Aljafería, Pilar and Goya's church paintings while the city's two headline Goya museums remain closed.
High-speed rail makes Zaragoza an easy overnight from Barcelona, but the old Goya-first itinerary needs rewriting. On 17 August 2026, Zaragoza's official tourism site marked both Museo Goya–Colección Ibercaja and Museo de Zaragoza as temporarily closed. Travel for the city that is open, not for museum doors an old guide still promises.
Compare Barcelona–Zaragoza trains for services from Barcelona Sants to Zaragoza Delicias. Compare live departures and ticket conditions; the fastest journey is around an hour and a half, while Delicias still requires local transport into the historic centre.
Day one: Pilar and the open Goya trail
Take a morning train, leave luggage at a central hotel and begin around Plaza del Pilar. The basilica contains Goya fresco work, but it is an active religious building: opening, worship and access take priority over art viewing.
Zaragoza's official Goya guide lists the current closures and other places connected with the artist. Use that live page to decide what survives on the actual date rather than substituting another closed museum.
Compare cancellable central Zaragoza hotels by tram or bus access from Delicias and luggage storage. The station is not beside Plaza del Pilar.
Spend the evening along the Ebro and old streets. A one-night trip does not need a second museum simply to justify the train.
Day two: reserve the Aljafería
Give the second morning to the Aljafería if current parliamentary and visitor operations allow. Book through the official ticket channel and check whether a session or event alters access. Then eat and return to Delicias with a full transport margin.
Allow roughly €130–300 per person for rail, one shared room, city transport, admissions and ordinary meals. The train fare and hotel determine most of the variation.
If the Aljafería is unavailable, keep the basilica, La Seo, riverside and open municipal heritage rather than chasing distant Goya sites. When the two museums reopen, they can restore a museum-led version of the overnight. Until then, the honest trip is Zaragoza with Goya still present in the city—not a “Goya museum weekend.”
